Tunnel lighting is typically designed to ensure that road users can comfortably and safely negotiate the transition from daylight to darkness and vice versa by providing a level of interior lighting which allows the driver’s eye to adapt gradually to the change in level..  This mitigates against the “Black Hole” effect and allows drivers to maintain full sight of the road ahead without suffering the effects of sudden darkness or glare.

The aims of tunnel lighting are to allow driver to safely enter, navigate through and exit a tunnel without impeding traffic.
